Category Error

Category Error

If you're a Christian and you have any opinions about politics, you need to familiarize yourself with the concept of "category error." Category error is when you mistake the nature of one thing for another. The implications for Christians in current year are life or death.

I used to have a Chinese boss. One morning, he brought in a box of what he laughingly called "Chinese donuts." They looked a little different, but when I see a weighty ball of dough in a pastel box, I expect a jelly-filled donut. So I hungrily took a bite, wondering in anticipation whether I had gotten one with strawberry or raspberry filling.

The correct answer was warm BBQ pork.

Now as much as I love BBQ pork, that momentary surprise was a bit horrifying. The brain-mouth disconnect was too much. My category error was mistaking a Chinese BBQ pork bun for a jelly donut. I had taken all the familiar markers and ignored the differences, until I tasted it. Each of us makes mistakes like this all the time.

The scary & potentially deadly aspect of category error is that there's literally no limit to how wrong you can be, or how dire the consequences of your mistake. Not only might you confuse anything for anything else, but you will then act vigorously & with clear conscience.

Most Christians are making this sort of deadly error when they look at BLM/Antifa. We're falling into the trap of trying to place all political actors on the left-right spectrum. "Oh you say some left-wing stuff & espouse violence. That just makes you even more left wing." We read BLM's creed that hates fathers, two sexes, whites, & order, and think, "Wow, they must be crazy, none of this helps bIack people." We call them "crazy" & "extreme" because we have confused one thing for something radically different.

Shifting gears for a moment, man has lived in end times since Ascension/Pentecost. It isn't necessary to delve into Millennialist errors in order to confess that God warns us that Satan will be unbound to exert greater influence for a little while prior to Judgement. Jesus' very last sermons in Matthew 24-25, Mark 13, & Luke 21 all admonish that we be watchful for the coming of the end of the age. While many throughout history have abused this with false prophecies & elaborate fictions styled after Scripture, none of that nullifies God's command to do so.

So if a Christian were to use Scripture to anticipate what an unleashed Satan would attempt, what would that look like? God is a God of Truth. Satan would deceive, leading–if possible–even the elect astray, and turning the Nations away from the worship of the True God.

God is a God of Order. Satan would cast down the earthly authorities so that without the one who bears the sword to keep peace, Satan's evil will could prevail through his own wicked emissaries' violence & murder, bringing suffering to every corner of the world.

God is Creator of all things. Satan would animate man's hubris against the fabric of Creation itself, in vain & grotesque attempts to turn men into women, humans into robots, and all men into slaves to every form of lust in opposition to God's commands & promises.

"Yeah but people have always been sinful, just look at X. Today is no worse." Really? We didn't always have police snipers on library roofs to prevent angry parents from protesting that a man pretending to be a woman, dressed in a literal demon costume is writhing on the floor in front of small kids.

The fundamental building blocks of God's ordered Creation are being demolished on live TV every night, and Satan is just getting warmed up. This is not the same as it was in the 60s or the 30s or any other historic period you fancy. This is something no one has seen before.

And here's the point: ALL of this destruction & evil is being done explicitly in the name of politics. So do we believe them? Are BLM/Antifa actually just misguided sinners who espouse untenable political views? Are we merely up against bad ideas?

Or do we judge the nature of the thing–not by how it describes itself, and not based on some commonalities it shares–but based on the fundamental nature of the means & the ends they are ultimately advancing? These enemies of Creation & Christendom are acting as foot soldiers of Satan himself. Do we as Christians continue to treat them as political foes? They gleefully embrace that disguise. Do we really believe our enemies rejoicing is good news for us?

The only Christian response to what we see unfolding is to call it what it is: Satan's coming out party, just as God promised. Stop the category error. Stop calling things "woke." Stop saying that these demons "just have some bad ideas." These are Satan's fists, boots, teeth, & howls. And while we are not promised any earthly victory in this life, we still have our vocational duties as sons, fathers, husbands to guard both the physical & spiritual welfare of those under our charge.

We know who wins in the end. Christ secured that victory on the Cross. Our actions in this life are only to His glory and in service of His will. We don't do battle against Satan's forces in pursuit of earthly victory. We do it because it is the only thing a Christian may do. But that just battle can't even truly begin as long as we're calling a possum a cat, a BBQ pork bun a jelly donut, or a demon a thug. All Christian action flows from Truth. We must speak & understand truthfully before we can do anything with God's blessing.

Even if my speculation about Revelation is 100% wrong, everything else is 100% true. I see the latter as a clear sign that the former is true. You may disagree, but you can't in good conscience disagree about what we're facing.

Eph 6:10ff

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.

Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak.
